Inside Krem Karamel: an Edinburgh Based Bookshop & Cafe

Here’s a sneak peek inside Edinburgh’s newest bookshop & cafe!

Krem Karamel are an established cake making and catering brand, who opened their first bookshop and cafe in early 2022. I’d heard that renovations were underway through a friend who lives locally, and excitedly planned a visit into my next Edinburgh trip.

Krem Karamel Bookshop & Cafe is located north of the city centre, at 68 Interleith Row. They’re opposite the Royal Botanic Garden, which is perfect for a post lunch stroll!

The decor inside the cafe is gorgeous, as I’m sure you can tell from my photos. Large windows let in a generous amount of natural light, and the walls are painted in soothing pink and white tones. Completing the look are glossy blue tiles, pastel coloured furnishings, a smattering of delicious looking cakes and desserts, and two shelves stacked with books. What could be better?

We visited during the lunch time rush, but only had to wait outside for around five minutes until a table became available. The staff were cheerful and friendly, and the food was utterly delicious. I opted for an Oreo cake jar, which was layered inside a decorative glass and topped with an Oreo, while my boyfriend enjoyed a steaming bowl of broccoli soup with a slab of cheesecake on the side. We were really impressed and I’ll definitely be back to sample more of their sweet treats next time I’m in Edinburgh!

I’d recommend popping in outside of mealtimes if you’d like to have a peruse at their bookshelves, which is one of the cafe’s main draws for us bookworms. They have a lovely collection of foodie themed books, ranging from picture books and middle grade, to general fiction and cook books. I was eyeing up a copy of a literary themed cook book, Scone With the Wind by Miss Victoria Sponge, and the acclaimed Chocolat by Joanne Harris.

If you like books and/or cake then do pop into Krem Karamel during your next trip to Edinburgh. Their new cafe & bookshop is lovely and so worth a visit.
