Taylor Jenkins Reid Books in Order

What Order To Read Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Books

The following books can be read in any order, however, I would recommend starting with any of her titles from 2017 onwards.

This is simply because I feel that these are the best, and when Taylor Jenkins Reid really started to master her craft.

Atmosphere (2025)

Anyone who enjoys reading about outer space will absolutely adore this book, which follows a group of wannabe astronauts as they earn the right to don their space suits.

Synopsis:

“In the summer of 1980, astrophysics professor Joan Goodwin begins training to be an astronaut at Houston’s Johnson Space Center, alongside an exceptional group of fellow candidates: Top Gun pilot Hank Redmond; mission specialists John Griffin and Lydia Danes; warmhearted Donna Fitzgerald; and Vanessa Ford, the magnetic and mysterious aeronautical engineer.

As the new astronauts prepare for their first flights, Joan finds a passion and a love she never imagined and begins to question everything she believes about her place in the observable universe.

Then, in December of 1984, on mission STS-LR9, everything changes in an instant.”

Carrie Soto is back (2022)

I’m not usually a tennis fan but I absolutely loved this story and it kept me gripped until the final page.

Synopsis:

“By the time Carrie retires from tennis, she is the best player the world has ever seen. She has shattered every record and claimed twenty Slam titles. And if you ask her, she is entitled to every one. She sacrificed nearly everything to become the best, with her father as her coach.

But six years after her retirement, Carrie finds herself sitting in the stands of the 1994 US Open, watching her record be taken from her by a brutal, stunning, British player named Nicki Chan.

At thirty-seven years old, Carrie makes the monumental decision to come out of retirement and be coached by her father for one last year in an attempt to reclaim her record.”

Malibu Rising (2021)

Malibu Rising was the last that I read out of TJR’s famous four, and admittedly, it took me a little while to get into it. It’s definitely well worth a read and features a few cameos of a certain tennis player.

Synopsis:

“August,1983, it is the day of Nina Riva's annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone who is anyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: surfer and supermodel Nina, brothers Jay and Hud, and their adored baby sister Kit.

Together, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over - especially as the children of the legendary singer Mick Riva.

By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours of dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family will all come bubbling to the surface.”

Daisy Jones and the Six (2019)

My first Taylor Jenkins Reid book, I loved the unique format of this one which is told in the form of a documentary. I’ve not read anything like it before or since!

Synopsis:

“Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go.

The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ’n’ roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road. Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.”

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (2017)

One of my all time favourite books, I spent years ignoring everyone who raved about this on Instagram and I only wish I’d read it sooner.

Synopsis:

“Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life.

But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the '80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love.

Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.”

One True Loves (2016)

This one is very sweet and really made me think - what would I do in Emma’s situation?

Synopsis:

“In her twenties, Emma Blair marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, far away from the expectations of their parents and the people of their hometown in Massachusetts.

They travel the world together, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure. On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever.

Emma quits her job and moves home in an effort to put her life back together. Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness. That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her.

With a husband and a fiance, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants while trying to protect the ones she loves. But who is her one true love? What does it mean to love truly?”

Maybe in Another Life (2015)

Maybe in Another Life follows two parallel universes, each created off the back of one decision.

Synopsis:

“At the age of twenty-nine, Hannah Martin still has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has lived in six different cities and held countless jobs since graduating college. On the heels of leaving another city, Hannah moves back to her hometown of Los Angeles and takes up residence with her best friend Gabby. Shortly after, Hannah goes out to a bar one night with Gabby and meets up with her high school boyfriend, Ethan.

Just after midnight, Gabby asks Hannah if she’s ready to go. A moment later, Ethan offers to give her a ride later if she wants to stay. Hannah hesitates. What happens if she leaves with Gabby? What happens if she leaves with Ethan?

In concurrent story lines, Hannah lives out the effects of each decision. Quickly, these parallel universes develop into radically different stories with large-scale consequences for Hannah, as well as the people around her.”

After I Do (2014)

An exploration of marriage, After I do follows Lauren as she takes a year long break from her husband.

Synopsis:

“When Lauren and Ryan's marriage reaches the breaking point, they come up with an unconventional plan. They decide to take a year off in the hopes of finding a way to fall in love again. One year apart, and only one rule: they cannot contact each other. Aside from that, anything goes.

Lauren embarks on a journey of self-discovery, quickly finding that her friends and family have their own ideas about the meaning of marriage. These influences, as well as her own healing process and the challenges of living apart from Ryan, begin to change Lauren's ideas about monogamy and marriage.

She starts to question: When you can have romance without loyalty and commitment without marriage, when love and lust are no longer tied together, what do you value? What are you willing to fight for?”

Forever, Interrupted (2013)

This book is absolutely devastating and follows a woman after the worst happens - her husband loses his life nine days after their elopement.

Synopsis:

“Elsie Porter is an average twentysomething and yet what happens to her is anything but ordinary. On a rainy New Year's Day, she heads out to pick up a pizza for one. She isn't expecting to see anyone else in the shop, much less the adorable and charming Ben Ross.

Their chemistry is instant and electric. Ben cannot even wait twenty-four hours before asking to see her again. Within weeks, the two are head over heels in love. By May, they've eloped.

Only nine days later, Ben is out riding his bike when he is hit by a truck and killed on impact. Elsie hears the sirens outside her apartment, but by the time she gets downstairs, he has already been whisked off to the emergency room. At the hospital, she must face Susan, the mother-in-law she has never met-and who doesn't even know Elsie exists.”

Which Taylor Jenkins Reid Books Are Connected?

You may have heard that some of TJR’s books are connected, and that’s correct.

Four of her books are linked and, although they can be read in any order, they form a quartet centring around the lives of four famous women. Each novel is fantastic, and once you’ve read one you’ll want to read them all.

The four linked books are: Carrie Soto is Back, Malibu Rising, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones and the Six.

Authors Like Taylor Jenkins Reid

Kristen Hannah

Known for her sweeping historical fiction novels like The Nightingale and The Women, many of Kristen Hannah's books will appeal to Taylor Jenkins Reid fans.

Synopsis for The Women:

“When twenty-year-old nursing student, Frances "Frankie" McGrath, hears these unexpected words, it is a revelation. Raised on California's idyllic Coronado Island and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing, being a good girl.

But in 1965 the world is changing, and she suddenly imagines a different path for her life. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she impulsively joins the Army Nurses Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the young men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war, as well as the unexpected trauma of coming home to a changed America. But Frankie will also discover the true value of female friendship and the heartbreak that love can cause.”

Andy Weir

If you enjoyed Atmostphere, then you’ll love Andy Weir’s books!

Having written a number of space related fiction books, including The Martian, Hail Mary and Artemis, Weir is excellent at what he does. His books are compelling, well written, and include lots of scientific detail that helps to immerse you within their world, without being too complicated.

Synopsis for Project Hail Mary:

“Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company. His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery-and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he's got to do it all alone. Or does he?”

Beth O’Leary

Rom com fans need to dive into Beth O’Leary’s work.

If you enjoy a quirky romance with a unique plot, then you will really like her books. I recommend starting with The Flatshare, which was her very first novel and is also my favourite.

Synopsis:

“Tiffy Moore needs a cheap flat, and fast. Leon Twomey works nights and needs cash.

Their friends think they're crazy, but it's the perfect solution: Leon occupies the one-bed flat while Tiffy's at work in the day, and she has the run of the place the rest of the time.

But with obsessive ex-boyfriends, demanding clients at work, wrongly imprisoned brothers and, of course, the fact that they still haven't met yet, they're about to discover that if you want the perfect home you need to throw the rulebook out the window...”

Jennifer Iacopelli

Fans of Carrie Soto is Back will love Jennifer Iacopelli’s books, which dive into the complex world of competitive sports.

Covering a range of disciplines, Jennifer’s books feature gymnastics, figure skating and tennis. Each of them explore relationships, scandals and high stakes competition - with one of her novels, Finding Her Edge, recently being adapted into a popular Netflix series.

Synopsis:

“Adriana Russo's dream is to conquer the figure skating Junior World Championships. But with her family's ice-skating rink facing financial ruin, allowing cameras to film their every move is the only thing keeping that dream alive.

Then her new dance partner, Brayden, sparks an idea that could turn them into stars: let the world believe their on-ice chemistry is real. But as Adriana begins to fall for Brayden, Freddie - her former partner and first crush - skates back into her life.

Will Adriana claim her place on the podium or will she follow her heart?”

This Song is About Us by Sara Barnard

A well known UK based young adult author, Sara Barnard’s 2025 novel This Song Is About Us is ideal for readers who loved Daisy Jones and the Six.

Like Taylor Jenkins Reid’s book, this story explores relationships, fame and fandom, as a band gains in popularity. The story is also told through an interesting format, showing how the relationship develops and changes across three summer festivals.

Whether you are a frequent reader of young adult books, or if this is your first one, I do think that you will enjoy this book.

Synopsis:

“The Kerbs are a four-piece pop rock band on the verge of breaking big the moment that frontman Drew turns 18 at the end of the summer. But Drew and his long-term girlfriend Ruby have a decision to make: go public right from the start or keep their relationship private, away from the intrusive lens of the tabloids and the scrutiny of the Kerbs’ fanbase.

The choice seems easy. Ruby wants her life to remain her own – she's seen how fame can devour the lives of those who stand in the periphery.

But staying secret comes with a price. As Drew's star rises and rumours begin to stir, Ruby starts to wonder if love is strong enough to keep them together when Drew's fame seems destined to drive them apart.”
