Quick Answer…
Best Cabins
There are certain qualities that you will want to look for in a cabin on any cruise ship.
If you’re prone to seasickness, then book yourself a mid-ship cabin on a lower deck, as they are impacted less by rough weather. If you don’t get seasick, then you may actually want to book a balcony cabin on one of the higher decks, as they have the best views! This is a great idea if you’re visiting somewhere like the Norwegian Fjords which are incredibly beautiful.
If you want extra space, then I’d recommend opting for a suite, which are much bigger than an ordinary cabin and come with extra amenities.
Finally, if you’re a light sleeper and want to make sure your cabin is quiet, then try and look for a cabin that is away from the lifts and other high traffic areas of the ship. Watch out for entertainment venues, which may be above or below your cabin, and have the potential to cause noise disturbance late into the night.
Worst Cabins
One of the main cabin types to avoid are located underneath entertainment venues, as described above. Bars with late night entertainment can cause a lot of noise, so if you’re a light sleeper, then you will want to avoid these.
Other cabins to avoid include those near busy public areas, or any rooms that have an obstructed view. For example, Ambition has obstructed view cabins on deck 7 that are caused by the lifeboats, which are stored on the deck outside. This means that you won’t get the best views from your cabin window, so if this is important to you, then it’s best avoided.
If you suffer from seasickness, then you should stay away from cabins on higher decks that are towards the forward end of the ship. These experience more sway in rough weather, and although they won’t cause problems for everyone, it’s worth staying away from if you do get motion sick - particularly if you are sailing through somewhere rough like the North Sea.
Best & Worst Cabins on Ambience
Best balcony cabins
The balcony cabins are located on decks 10 and 11 on Ambience. If you have the budget then you may want to opt for a suite, which are more expensive but much larger with extra amenities. If you want to book the very best, then consider the deluxe suites which are at the back of deck 11, as they are the most luxurious on the ship.
Quietest decks
Decks 9 and 10 only have cabins, and are sandwiched between two other cabin only decks. This means they are the least likely to experience noise from bars or other entertainment venues.
Cabins to avoid on Ambience
If you want the best views, then watch out for the obstructed view cabins on deck 7 which are located next to the lifeboats. If noise is an issue for you, it’s recommended that you stay away from the central cabins on decks 5 and 6, which are close to a number of bars and entertainment venues.
Best cabins for value
One of the deck 7 obstructed view cabins could actually be great if you’re not bothered too much about the view, and want to find a good deal. They will generally be cheaper than other ocean view cabins which don’t have an obstruction.
If you’re not planning to spend much time in your room then I’d highly recommend booking an inside cabin, which are the cheapest in price. Although they are more basic, inside cabins are typically just as functional as any other cabin - they just won’t have a window and may be slightly smaller.
The inside cabins on Ambition are located across decks 8,9,10 and 11, so you can take your pick depending on your preferences.
Best & Worst Cabins on Ambition
Best balcony cabins
The most luxurious cabins on Ambition are the deluxe cabins on decks 7 and 8. If you want a balcony but don’t want to opt for a suite, then choose one of the 12 non-suite balcony cabins that are at the back of decks 9 and 10.
Quietest decks
Deck 9 is likely to be the quietest, as it’s a cabin only deck with other cabins both above and below, and no entertainment venues. Decks 8 and 10 are also likely to be quiet as they are cabin only decks, but do have some entertainment venues nearby.
Cabins to avoid on Ambition
It has been reported that the cabins towards the front of Deck 7, near The Cavern, have a tendency to be noisy, with potential for the same issue at the front of deck 8. Similarly to Ambience, the ocean view cabins in the middle of deck 7 have obstructed views, which you may want to avoid if that’s a dealbreaker for you.
Best cabins for value
The inside cabins on Ambition are the best for budget travellers as they include everything you need, just without a window or porthole. Alternatively, ocean view cabins can be a good compromise if you want to be able to see outside but don’t want to book a balcony cabin or suite
The obstructed view cabins on deck 7 may actually be desirable for some cruisers as they usually come at a reduced price, making them a good deal for the right person.
Best & Worst Cabins on Renaissance
Best balcony cabins
For the best views, opt for a balcony cabin on decks 9 and 10. If you have the budget, some of the suites are enormous and come with additional perks like a butler, breakfast in bed and more. There are different categories of suite so make sure you check which amenities are offered for each one.
Quietest decks
These are likely to be decks 4 and 5, which are away from any entertainment venues and therefore more likely to be quiet.
Cabins to avoid
Many people will want to avoid the promenade terrace cabins on deck 6. These rooms are quite unique and feature sliding doors that open directly onto the promenade deck. While some cruisers might enjoy being able to step directly onto the promenade, this does give you less privacy as you will have people walking past your cabin.
Best cabins for value
As this ship primarily sails in the Caribbean for Ambassador, my top choice here would be a balcony cabin. These feel like amazing value in warm climates as they give you a private space where you can enjoy the sunshine.
Which Ambassador Cabin Type Is the Best?
The answer to this question really depends on what you want out of your cabin on a cruise ship. Objectively, the best cabins on the Ambassador suite are the deluxe suites on Ambassador and Ambition, as they are the largest and have the highest number of amenities. For many people this will be worth the price, but it depends on whether you have the budget.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the inside cabins are usually the cheapest on any ship. Some people will love the bargain of an inside cabin and plan to spend most of their time elsewhere on the ship, while others will hate the thought of not having a window.
Ocean view cabins make a nice compromise, and give you a well priced room with a window or porthole. If you’re desperate for your own outside space, then you should definitely book either a balcony cabin or a suite, which all have their own private balconies. This is invaluable if you’re sailing somewhere beautiful, or if you enjoy looking out to sea while travelling to your next port.
Finally, many solo travellers will find the dedicated solo cabins to be the best onboard. These often sell out quickly and can be found as inside, ocean view or balcony varieties. Keep an eye out for promotions on the Ambassador website which remove the single supplement, making it cheaper than usual to sail on your own.
Tips for Choosing the Right Cabin
Be honest with yourself and decide what is most important to you, as well as the budget you have available. Here are my best tips for choosing your cabin on Ambassador Cruise Line:
Choose lower and more central cabins to avoid seasickness (if you are susceptible)
For quiet cabins, choose decks that are away from entertainment venues and surrounded above and below by other cabins
To further avoid noise, choose a cabin that is away from the lifts, as this will generally be a high traffic area
Consider a balcony cabin if you think you’ll spend time using it
Look out for solo supplement deals on the Ambassador Cruise Line website if sailing alone
Final Verdict
The best and worst cabins on a cruise ship really depend on your needs and preferences. Make sure you do your research, and if you’re not sure, call Ambassador’s reservations team who will be able to advise you.
