Crystal Cruises vs Viking Cruises: Which Is Better?
(I sailed with Crystal Cruises and Viking Cruises for free part of a press trip, however, all opinions are my own)
If you’re trying to decide between Crystal Cruises and Viking Cruises, then you’re in the right place.
While both lines offer premium, high end experiences, they have a different vibe and suit different cruising styles. Personally, I have sailed and loved Viking and Crystal, but can definitely see how each company would suit a different type of cruiser.
In this blog post I give a clear, side-by-side comparison and explain which cruise would be better suited for your tastes. Whichever you pick, you’re sure to have an amazing time!
Crystal vs Viking Cruises: which is better?
Crystal is classed as an ultra luxury cruise line, known for being all inclusive and having a timeless, traditional feel.
Viking, on the other hand, is a luxury cruise line that specialises in cultural exploration with a relaxed atmosphere.
Ships and Overall Experience
What are Crystal Cruises’ ships like?

Crystal has a small fleet, currently operating two ships and with another to join in 2028. Their existing ships are relatively old when compared to other cruise lines, with the Crystal Symphony dating back to 1995 and the Crystal Serenity entering service in 2003.
Despite their age, both of the ships have been immaculately renovated, and radiate a traditional luxury feel. Their newest ship, the Crystal Grace, is brand new and set to bring an exciting new era to Crystal Cruises.

Viking are one of the largest cruise operators in the world, with more than 100 vessels across their entire river, ocean and expedition fleet. The ships are modern, with a sleek Scandinavian feel that reflects the brand’s Nordic roots.
The general atmosphere is calm, with pockets of lively entertainment in the evenings. Most of all, their cruises are very destination focused, with their onboard entertainment reflecting the ship’s itinerary.
Even at a glance you can see that while both cruise lines are lovely, they do cater for different types of passengers.
Food and Dining Comparison
Crystal Cruises food vs Viking Cruises food
It’s difficult to say which cruise line has better food, Viking or Crystal, as they both have fantastic onboard cuisine. Instead, I think it really comes down to your own personal preference.
For example, Crystal Cruises have optional Japanese and Italian restaurants, as well as the steakhouse BeefBar. Viking, on the other hand, has an Italian restaurant and a multi-course tasting restaurant called the Chef’s Table, that features cuisines from around the world.

Both cruise lines have a buffet, but crucially, the buffet on Crystal Cruises is closed at dinner time. This is absolutely fine if you much prefer an al la carte evening meal, but I found Viking’s answer to a buffet (called the World Cafe) to be very classy with great food and atmosphere.
Of course both lines have a main dining room, as well as pool bars and additional daytime options. Crystal serve their afternoon tea in the traditional looking Palm Court, while Viking serve theirs in the Scandinavian style Wintergarden.
Similarly, Viking has a Norwegian Deli that opens for breakfast and lunch in the Explorer’s Lounge, while Crystal has the Bistro cafe which offers light daytime meals.
Remember what I said about vibes? They’re very different on each line - despite them both serving fabulous food!
Excursions and Destinations
Crystal vs Viking excursions comparison
So are Viking’s excursions better than those offered Crystal Cruises? Well, it really depends on what you mean by better.
One of Viking’s perks is that they offer one included excursion at every port. They are the only cruise line to do this and I think it’s absolutely incredible. Of course you don’t have to join an excursion at every stop, but it’s lovely to have the option without needing to dig into your pockets.
Of course, there are additional excursions available if you want them, but anyone who appreciates good value will love this part of a Viking Cruise.
Crystal Cruises also offer a wide variety of excursions, although they are all paid for options. This is great if you only plan on doing a few excursions during your cruise, or if you have a generous budget that covers the cost of a variety of premium excursions.
Again, this really depends on your personal circumstances and expectations for your trip. For better value, choose Viking, but if you’re planning on doing fewer excursions, then Crystal might be the line for you.
Pricing and Value for Money
Crystal Cruises vs Viking price comparison
It’s no secret that Crystal Cruises is an expensive cruise line, but you do really get what you pay for. This is an ultra-luxury line, one of the finest in the world, and you really are paying for the best of the best.
Similarly, Viking has a slightly lower price point and is great value for money, with slightly fewer luxuries than Crystal while retaining a premium feel.
Is Crystal Cruises worth the extra cost over Viking?
The answer to this is - it depends. If you want an ultra luxurious experience, with a butler, all inclusive premium drinks and a traditional feel, then you will probably prefer Crystal.
Personally, I feel that both cruise lines offer good value for money, with an excellent onboard experience. The main difference here will be your budget, and your expectations of the cruise itself.
My verdict: For the best value, go for Viking. For the best luxury, go for Crystal.
Dress Code & Atmosphere
Crystal Cruises dress code vs Viking
Ok, another easy question. Which cruise is more formal, Crystal or Viking?
Crystal Cruises are slightly more formal in the evenings, making it perfect for passangers who like to dress up while on holiday. While you don’t necessarily need to bring a ball gown or three piece suit, you will want to pack an all white outfit for ‘White Night’, which takes place on every cruise that’s 7 nights or more.

Viking, on the other hand, is known for being relaxed yet sophisticated. The evenings have a relaxed smart casual dress code, with no black tie, but also no jeans allowed in the main restaurants and bars in the evenings.
If you’re keen to have the opportunity to get dressed up, then you may prefer Crystal. If you are more destination focused and happy to abide by a relaxed evening dress code, then you’ll find yourself better suited to Viking.
Who Each Cruise Line Is Best For
I honestly loved both cruise lines, but I’m a versatile traveller who’s keen to sample different types of cruises. If you’re more specific about your preferences, then this should help you to make your decision.
Choose Crystal if you:
Want an ultra-luxury experience, with premium services throughout the ship. This is also the line for you if you favour a slightly more formal atmosphere reminiscent of the more traditional cruise experience.
Choose Viking if you:
Prefer relaxed yet classy cultural travel with a modern Scandinavian feel. You’ll also love Viking if you’re keen to attend included excursions at each port.
Both lines would be fab for first time cruisers, as the onboard experience is excellent all round. The small size of the ships makes them easy to navigate, and sailing with each of these lines is really easy.
Similarly, I feel that both lines would suit senior cruisers well, in addition to other age demographics. It’s worth remembering that Viking is an adults only cruise line, but on Crystal I saw a number of multi-generational groups including several children.
